We selected the two most common sublimation paper weights on the market — 40gsm lightweight paper and 100gsm high-density paper — and conducted cross-testing:
Scenario 1: 100gsm paper with its dedicated ICC profile
Result: Optimal color vibrancy, smooth gradients, and perfect transfer efficiency. A quality benchmark.
Scenario 2: 100gsm paper with the 40gsm profile
Result: Transfer colors appeared lighter, severely lacking saturation. This shows that a profile optimized for lightweight paper delivers insufficient ink load to meet the transfer requirements of heavier paper.
Scenario 3: 40gsm paper with the 100gsm profile
Result: Paper curling, heavy bleeding, and ink waste. The excessive ink load designed for heavy paper oversaturated the lightweight paper, causing physical deformation and instability.
Scenario 4: 40gsm paper with its dedicated ICC profile
Result: Stable transfer process and outstanding, reliable color output.
Before we analyze the results, let's define a key term. An ICC Profile is a standardized digital file that acts as a color translator. Every device in your workflow—your monitor, printer, and even the paper—sees and produces color differently.
Think of it this way: your design software speaks "perfect color," but your printer and paper speak their own unique "dialects." An ICC Profile interprets the instructions from the software and precisely translates them into the specific language your unique combination of printer, ink, and paper understands.
