The desire for novel ways to embellish performance fabrics and garments has risen dramatically as a result of the influx of performance fabrics and garments being developed for a variety of specialized markets. This is where dye sublimation printing comes in. The lack of a "print feel" to the garment is one of the most appealing aspects of this method. There is no remaining ink on the surface to produce a texture or to obstruct airflow because it dyes a white fiber with heat and pressure. Many sports teams are switching to sublimated sportswear for their training gear and uniforms because it retains all of the dry-wicking capabilities of an undecorated garment while also being much more vibrant.

Because polyester is the greatest fabric for absorbing dye into the fibers, sublimation printing is nearly typically done on a polyester garment. Some clothes have a cotton basis with a polyester covering or poly fibers woven into the cotton to provide printers more options, but the best surface for sublimation is one that will accept the dying process from the ink as it changes into a gas fully.

Assuming you're familiar with the basics of the process and have a good idea of what kinds of garments you can print on, here are a few quick tips to help you get the best prints possible: learning the color progression of sublimation, adjusting your design comps to fit the products, incorporating the nature of sublimation into your designs, and understanding outsourcing vs printing in-house.

Learning the color progression of sublimation
It's critical for printers who are just getting started with sublimation to understand how color is altered during the dying process. Additional saturation and other color shifts are almost always present when color is absorbed via the fibers. A little difference in the brightness of the cloth to be sublimated might also have an impact on the final output. White, on the other hand, is usually never a balanced white. A fabric's white will be somewhat blue, magenta, or even green in color. A small tint to your white surface can show up in a sublimation print, causing your lighter colors to move slightly in accordance with their propensity.

Sublimation ink

This is why sublimation prints are frequently brighter and have richer colors, as they will show less variance in subtle ways when the process is completed. Prior to completing a production run, take some time to thoroughly profile your process all the way through. Because sublimation inks are expensive, a printer may not want to spend the time and money to create a color profile, but if done correctly, it may save a lot of difficulties and be used as a benchmark for a process baseline to measure against.

Get a sample of the product or fabric to test if you're intending to execute a sublimated print on a garment. You may then create a sublimation profile to test how the colors react once they've been applied to the fabric. If you need to make some curves for that specific object, you can go back and change your RIP after you have this reference. A good RIP for a sublimation printer should allow you to preserve recipes for various fabrics and coatings so that you can have a more streamlined procedure for a future production run. To avoid the design being overly heavy and over-saturated, you may need to modify your colors or reduce the amount of black.

NOTE: Color profiling is recommended by most firms that supply sublimation equipment, inks, and printers. It's always a good idea to start with these procedures and then tweak them as needed once you're more comfortable. Reverse engineering a print to RIP is a last resort that is only used for really demanding and difficult-to-match images.
